Administration Reveals Federal Worker Layoffs as Shutdown Nears Third Week

Administration officials disclosed the start of federal worker layoffs on the end of the week, following through on prior threats in response to the continuing US government shutdown, which is now poised to extend into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office posted on social media that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the government’s procedure for letting employees go.

Although the official did not specify which agencies were impacted, a treasury spokesperson stated that layoff warnings had been issued within that agency. Furthermore, a DHS representative noted that staff reductions would also occur at the CISA. Moreover, a union for federal workers announced that employees at the Education Department would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Union leaders cautions that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on services used by the public and pledged to challenge the actions in the legal system.

“It is disgraceful that the administration has exploited the funding lapse as an pretext to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who provide critical services to communities across the country,” said Everett Kelley, who leads the AFGE.

The largest labor federation in the US responded to the news, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Congressional Democrats have refused to vote for a Republican-backed legislation to restore funding unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. After repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until the following week, indicating the deadlock is not expected to be ended soon.

During a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, blasted Senate Democrats for rejecting the Republican bill, which was approved in the House on a near party-line vote.

Federal workers’ final pay that government employees will see until Washington Democrats decide to fulfill their duties and end the shutdown,” Johnson said. Beginning shortly, American service members, who often live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Previously, labor groups sought a court injunction to prevent the administration from implementing any layoffs during the shutdown. Moreover, a federal judge ordered the administration to disclose details on termination strategies, affected agencies, and whether any government staff had been brought back to carry out layoffs.

A report argued that a government shutdown limits the ability of the administration to carry out firings, citing official advice that acknowledged any permanent layoffs need to have been started before the funding expired.

Consequences for Employees

These terminations occurred on the very day that federal workers received only a incomplete payment for the end of the previous month but not the start of the current month, since appropriations expired at the beginning of the month.

Max Stier, the president of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, condemned the gridlock’s effect on federal employees.

This is unjust to make government staff suffer because our elected officials in Congress and the White House have failed to keep our government open and operational,” Stier said. The air traffic controllers, VA nurses, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not at fault for this government shutdown.”

The irony is that lawmakers and senior White House leaders are continuing to be paid during the shutdown.
