Christantus Uche Sparks Comfortable Palace Victory at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Despite embarking on their first-ever European campaign, Crystal Palace are adapting at a rapid pace. Without star figures like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the London club departed Dublin with a comfortable win that all but guarantees them a place in the Europa Conference League playoffs.
A further victory in their next fixture against Finland's KuPS should be enough to secure direct entry to the last 16, especially after a prior setback against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Grasp the Moment
This match provided a chance for several Palace's lesser-used talent to impress. Christantus Uche, in only his second beginning after arriving on loan from Getafe, notched the account with a well-taken goal. Forward Eddie Nketiah added a second, scoring for the second consecutive match.
A Shelbourne side that had concluded their league season were outmatched against a largely rotated Palace outfit. The visitors were already weakened by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with knee injuries.
Dominance Established from the Start
In spite of torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly took control. A slick passing sequence in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, allowed Nketiah to set up Uche for a simple tap-in.
Midfielder Adam Wharton went close soon after, driving a powerful effort over the bar. Nketiah then appealed for a penalty after bursting into the area, but the referee dismissed the appeals.
The formerArsenal man didn't need to wait long to find his goal, prodding home from a yard out after Uche's effort had hit the post.
Shelbourne were clinging on for dear life. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to escape a booking for two robust tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the woodwork with a header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Game
The contest was effectively over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past a series of comically weak challenges before coolly dispatching a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
Following the break, manager Oliver Glasner took the chance to rest key individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse almost scoring his very first touch, only to see his effort blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one shot strike off both posts before being gathered on the line. Uche then blazed a glaring chance, showing there is still scope for improvement in his game.
A solitary concern for Palace was a second-half injury to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This allowed 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to earn his senior debut, capping an otherwise positive night for the traveling side.
